UPDATED WEEKLY Many consider the Battle of the Atlantic the most important front of the entire war. The very survival of Great Britain relied on oversees trade. U-Boats and surface raiders, very nearly won the battle. By 1943 British and American tactics and technology had turned the tide. By 1945 790 U-boats were sunk by ASW ships, planes and mines. The Kriegsmarines Unterseeboot (submarine) flotilla or better known as the U-boat, was commanded by Befehlshaber der Unterseeboote (Commander of Submarines) Konteradmiral(Rear Admiral 2 star) Karl Dönitz. Dönitz was a seasoned World War I U-boat commander. In World War I he was given command of UC-25, which was sunk in the Atlantic. Dönitz was captured and spent from 1916-18 in a British POW camp. By 1942 U-boat strength reached a point where Dönitz could deploy his strategy of attacking convoys on mass. The Rudel or Wolfsrudel (Wolf pack) tactic would generate havoc amongst convoys in route to Great Britain. Shipping losses crossing the Atlantic became critical from 1940-1943. U-boat tactics were highly effective against convoys. Many U-boat commanders would surface within the convoy at night and torpedo ships. The Royal Navys escort was never large enough. During the early years of the battle, the Allies had a significant advantage over the Kriegsmarine. The 3 rotor naval enigma machine had been broken. Convoys could be easily shifted to different routes and avoid the wolf packs. However, Dönitz became suspicious of espionage with the German intelligence community. U-boats began receiving the new 4 rotor enigma. Bletchley Park lost its ability to read Kriegsmarine message for 10 months. The turning point came in 1943. All the experience and knowledge battling the U-boat, developed into innovative tactics and technology. Eight-centimeter radar could locate a U-boat without the U-boat sensing the waves. Huff/Duff could locate U-boats radio waves and give a general location of the transmitting U-boat. Aircraft with search lights, hunted surfaced U-boats re-charging their batteries. Hedge Hogs could spread lethal charges over a vast area and explode on contact. Finally convoys had aircraft escort from the length of their journey with escort carrier protection. The Allies became so competent at ASW warfare that Hunter/Killer groups hunted the hunters. By 1944 more U-boats were sunk in the Atlantic than merchantmen. Finally a steam video on water! This is a video of the superbly restored Nation trust's steam yacht Gondola. She was commissioned by Sir James Ramsden, director of the Furness Railway in the late 1850s because he saw the potential for the railway to transport tourists to the Lake District.
He therefore commissioned Gondola to sail Coniston Water with tourists that had traveled on the Furness Railway Paddle steamers from Fleetwood to Barrow in Furness.
The original Gondola sailed from the southern end of Coniston Water to the north daily from 1859 till her decommission in 1936.
From 1946 until the early 1960s she was a houseboat at the southern most tip of Coniston Water until she sank following a violent storm.
When she was being restored by the National trust a new hull was built, restored non original boiler & engine fitted etc so she is really a new vessel to a classic design.

I assembled this video for school on Asian Carp, an invasive species in the US, that jump when they're scared. There have been reports of them jumping as high as 15 feet in the air, and slamming into passing boats and their passengers. No one's ever been killed by one, though they've caused many broken noses, cheeks, jaw (rare), ribs (also rare), black eyes, etc. the fish can size typically anywhere from 5-50 lbs., though the world record was 110 lbs. His girlfriend, Samantha "Sam" Nicholson (Jessica Alba), has already realized her dream, working as a shark handler at a resort while living with Jared in a threadbare trailer on an idyllic tropical beach. The happy couple's lives are unalterably changed when Bryce Dunn (Scott Caan), Jared's childhood friend and a successful New York attorney, comes to Jamaica with his new girlfriend Amanda Collins (Ashley Scott). Bryce acquires a beautiful mansion and a luxury yacht that the quartet puts to good use as a party boat as they free dive around the island. The merriment takes a serious turn when Jared finds evidence of an ancient shipwreck. The four friends decide to partner as they search for enough relics to identify the old ship and claim it as their own. Then, on a later dive, they uncover another, more ominous wreck nearby. Jared and Sam want no part of this dangerous new discovery, but Bryce and Amanda see it as a way of financing their expedition. Jared realizes the money would help him compete on the same level as the islands' top salvagers, especially his longtime rival Derek Bates (Josh Brolin) and his assistant, Quinn (Chris Taloa). Sam convinces Jared to abandon any plans for taking advantage of this new treasure. But Amanda and Bryce have other ideas. Sneaking out in the dead of night, the two steal some of the cargo with a scheme to profit from it, using a shady nightclub owner, Primo (Tyson Beckford), as their connection. Bryce and Amanda have miscalculated, however, and find their lives in jeopardy unless they deliver the entire shipment to Primo.
