Lost Rides Of Alton Towers Part 6 - Swan Boat Ride

The Swan Boat Ride was installed for the 1987 season in the Ingestre Lake, which had previous held the Splash Cats. Manufactured by Intamin, the ride worked with a series of pulleys: each swan was pulled along by a cable and every time the swan accessed another pulley the direction of the swan would change. The swan moved very slowly, so it was an ideal ride for couples or if you just wanted a break from the crowds to relax, the ride lasted for approximately 6 minutes. Despite its Iconic status at the Towers (having featured heavily in advertising for the park) the Swans were never the most popular ride. Eventually this fact caught up with it, and it was removed at the end of 2003 due to its consistently low popularity with visitors. It was replaced by the pay per play Splash Kart Challenge in 2004. However the splash karts had a short life as in 2008 the lake was transformed ino a brand new ride called Battle Galleons part of Mutiny Bay.
