De zaterdag na kerst, 2008. Plotklaps blijkt de Waterspecht ingevroren! Even niet opgelet tijdens het kerstdiner! Tot overmaat van ramp is de motor er af voor onderhoud. De enige manier om de boot weg te krijgen is om het anker door de ijsvloer heen te smijten, en de boot op het ijs te trekken, waarna deze er door heen zakt. Niet zo fraai, noodgevalletje. De alumiunium boot is niet bestand tegen invriezen! maakt wel spectaculaire herrie. Wouter doet lekker mee!

New York--The Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board released Coast Guard footage today of the U.S. Airways passenger plane as it conducted an emergency landing into the Hudson River Jan. 15, 2009. The Coast Guard is conducting a safety zone around the plane, which is now located at Battery Park City, N.Y., while a commercial salvage team is working to remove the plane from the water.
The Coast Guard, New York Police and Fire Departments, New York Waterways and Circle Line ferry rescue teams launched a multi-asset response yesterday when the plane ditched onto the Hudson River, at approximately 3:30 p.m. Upon initial notification, Coast Guard Sector New York launched a fleet of small rescue boats and the 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Ridley was diverted to the scene. The Coast Guard Cutter Katherine Walker also arrived on scene to assist in the search and rescue efforts and enforcement of the safety zones. Three Coast Guard helicopters from Air Station Atlantic City, N.J., and one from Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., worked closely with New York City Police air assets to provide aerial support. The video was captured by Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Service. The purpose of a VTS is to provide active monitoring and navigational advice for vessels in particularly confined and busy waterways. There are two main types of VTS, surveillance and non-surveillance. Surveillance systems consist of one or more land-based sensors (including radar, Automated Identification Systems and closed circuit television sites), which output their signals to a central location where operators monitor and manage vessel traffic movement. Non-surveillance systems consist of one or more reporting points at which ships are required to report their identity, course, speed, and other data to the monitoring authority. The Coast Guard operates 12 Vessel Traffic Centers (VTC): Prince William Sound, Puget Sound, Valdez, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles/Long Beach, Houston-Galveston, Berwick Bay, Louisville, Saint Mary's River, Port Arthur, Tampa, and New York.

There were no immediate reports of any serious injuries. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an experienced pilot, said it appeared the pilot did a masterful job of landing the plane in the river and then making sure everybody got out. And Gov. David Patterson pronounced it a miracle on the Hudson. Flight 1549 went down minutes after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport for Charlotte, N.C., splashing into the river near 48th Street in midtown Manhattan. There were eyewitness reports the plane may have flown into a flock of birds, said Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Laura Brown. -Joe's POV- I was looking out the window when I saw Demi running in my direction aimlessly. She had an arm over her face and eventually collapsed right outside my door and rested her head against it. I slowly stood up and opened the door. She fell backwards slightly and gasped. "I-I'm sorry I didn't see where I was going and..." She stood up. I just stared at her. She looked up at me and turned to walk off but I couldn't stand it. I grabbed her shoulders and pulled her into a long, quiet hug. When I pulled her away I didn't say anything. I just walked inside and motioned for her to come in and she did. We sat uncomfortably across from each other, waiting for someone to say anything. Finally, I spoke up. "This is stupid. Just because of...." I trailed off and laughed to myself. She looked down. "Joe, I'm sorry." I turned towards her. "For what? You didn't do anything. You just told me what you felt. I can get over that." I stood up and paced. "No. I lied." I stopped and turned to her, then started pacing again. "Oh. Well, in that case what did you lie about hmm? Was it when you said you loved me? Cause it sure seems like you don't." I was clearly annoyed and I know I was being really rude to her but I just couldn't help it. I wanted to smack someone. She stood up and had a confused look on her face. "You think I would lie about something like that?" I raised my voice and said, "That still doesn't answer the question." I stopped again and turned to her. We were looking into each other eyes, each seeing what we had done to each other. "I do love you Joe. But when I said we couldn't be-" "Don't even say it. You know you meant what you said. And it's whatever. I'll move on and you can go and live your life happily without me." I started walking off towards the door but when I reached the handle I turned back and said, "And for the record, I lied too." She turned around to face me. "About what?" She had a tear running down her face now. "When I said I'd move on." I yanked the door open and stormed out, crashing the door closed. I walked far down the lake until I came to the boat. I sat down beside it, miserable at how I acted. I knew I was over reacting and she probably hated me right now. But I had to get over her somehow... I layed my head back and eventually drifted off to sleep. -Demi's POV- When Joe said those last words I broke down again. Why am I such an idiot? I love him. I want to be with him...but there's so way that's happening now. He hates me. I eventually pulled myself together, realizing this was his own cabin and I walked off. I went into the woods and remembered that night when Joe took me out on the boat. I smiled. Immediatly I walked otwards that direction, but frowned when I saw Joe sleeping beside it. I bit my lip and sat next to him. He was sleeping soundly and not making a single noise. I rested my hand on his and he moved a little bit. "I love you." I whispered to him, hoping he would hear. "Demi....I love you...why are you doing this?" He barely whispered. I knew he was still asleep. He talks a lot in his sleep. He went on to say, "Stop it...stop...you're breaking my heart! No, don't-" His head turned towards me and I saw his eyes were still closed. I held back more tears and let out a deep breath. So this is how he felt.... I stroked his hair and looked off in front of us. Suddenly I felt him stir and I heard him yawn. I felt him look towards me and scoff. I couldn't look at him. "What do you want?" He asked in an impatient tone, not looking at me. "You." I said flatly. He glanced back at me. "What did you just say?" GAHHH IM SICK. :[

This is one of several videos that I made during a holiday in Pattaya, Thailand in November 2008. The holiday, the name of which I forget, is a celebration of the end of the Raining Season. It involves putting small hand-held boats into the water within either the grounds of a Buddhist temple or into the ocean along a beach depending on which of my videos you are watching. The festival takes place at night and fireworks are also involved. The bright-colored things in the water are the little boats that the Thai people put in the water as part of the celebration. It has something to do with the idea of letting your problems drift away, or something to that effect.

Kitchener, Ontario is about midway between London where I lived for a couple of best of times/worst of times years and Toronto, Canadas primary metropolis. Id traveled past Kitcheners exit countless times, but never bothered turning in until K/WAG invited me to participate in their Parochial Views program. According to Wikipedia, Kitcheners downtown core has experienced urban decay, thanks largely to the decline of industrial jobs in the city and the growth of its suburbs. Preliminary inquiries sketched an unflattering portrait of it as grungy neighbour to the very nice university town of Waterloo. This was not my experience; I was impressed by how much the citizens of Kitchener enjoy their city, the casual ownership of public space that people seem encouraged to take there. The plaza in front of the city hall is part bus station part resort playground; I like to think of it as the Kitchener Riviera. While gentleman of the model boat club flexed their handiwork on one side of the pool, a more salt of the earth crowd cackled and shouted ribald greetings at comrades returning from the can at the other end. Teens made out on the steps, new parents wheeled elaborate strollers around, and a fender bender out on the street gave some focus to a range of loiterers. Not bad for a Wednesday night. The footage for Plaza was gathered when a block or two up the main drag the street was fenced off for a rock n roll extravaganza. Thousands of people attended were genuinely entertained, the pond was splashing, and when darkness fell an impromptu shopping cart grand prix ignited. Kitchener is a charming and funny town.
